Herping for salamanders can be a year-round task depending on where you are in the world. Each species has different habits during the seasons. This was a cold day in Northern Virginia at Algonkian Regional Park.

I’ve spent most of my life in Colorado, so I’m still catching on observations of all the herpetofauna in Virginia.

My buddy Caesar joined me. He’s a gecko breeder but loves getting out and herping when he can. Today we’d find our first Jefferson salamander as well as plenty of marbled salamander specimens. We’d even find the species I wanted to film: the eastern red-spotted newt!

I talk about the toxic skin secretions of the eastern red-spotted newt in the video. Enjoy!
