Sometimes it seems like finding copperheads in a mostly suburban area is kind of like musky fishing in heavily fished waters; there aren’t that many specimens to start with, and sometimes, you just pass right by them without knowing what you missed.

On this day, when I was actually out looking for eastern box turtles, I was lucky enough to finding a gorgeous copperhead. I’ll compare the nonvenomous northern watersnake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) to the eastern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) so that you can really see the differences between these snakes. It saddens me to think that people will kill these beautiful snakes out of fear and without even given them a chance to be relocated.
